Pakistan Elections 2024: Amid poll results delay, violence rocks Pakistan

As Pakistanis wait for the Pakistan elections 2024 results, several protests have rocked Pakistan. Pakistan’s general election on Feb 08 was marred by militant attacks, suspension of mobile phones and killing of several people. Imran Khan’s PTI and Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N are in neck-to-neck competition as Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif both declared victory in the elections. Amid the delay of election results, as per the Pakistan Election Commission independents backed by former PM Imran Khan won the most seats. Independent candidates of Imran Khan had won 100 seats, with Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) taking 72 seats. The polls were held for 265 Pakistan National Assembly seats, a party need 133 seats for a simple majority. Analysts predicted there may be no clear winner, adding problems to country’s economic crisis amid the polarised political environment. As per Dawn, PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) are proceeding to form a coalition govt in the Centre, Punjab, and Balochistan. Meanwhile, as per Reuters, candidates backed by the party of jailed Imran Khan plan to form a govt, an aide to the former PM said on Feb 10.

Iran launched drone and missile attacks on terrorist group headquarters in Pakistan’s Balochistan on Jan 16. Pakistan has strongly condemned Iran’s strikes on a terrorist group in Balochistan which claimed the lives of two children. The Foreign Ministry of Pakistan has termed the Iran airstrike in Pakistan as an “unprovoked violation” of its airspace by Iran. Also, the Ministry has warned of serious consequences and said that violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty “completely unacceptable”. Soon after Iran’s military action, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry raised the issue with the Iranian Counterpart on a diplomatic level. Islamabad highlighted that Tehran carried out the airstrike despite availability of several communication channels between the two. As per Al Arabiya News, Iran attacked the headquarters of Jaish al-Adl in Balochistan, Pakistan. Formed in 2012, this group has been designated as a “terrorist” organisation by Iran and operates in Sistan and Baluchestan province.

Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan was arrested during a court appearance in the capital Islamabad on May 09. The Cricketer-turned-politician was arrested in an Al-Qadir Trust graft by Pakistan Rangers. Security Expert Tilak Devasher called the arrest of Imran Khan “An important development in Pakistan”. On the other hand, reacting to the PTI Chief arrest, Defence Expert Qamar Agha mentioned it ‘Army’s big plan’. Islamabad: Imran Khan arrested in corruption charges outside court

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested on Tuesday by Pakistani Rangers outside the Islamabad High Court. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief was taken into custody in connection with the Al Qadir Trust case, for which the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had summoned him multiple times. The leader had earlier posted a video on his twitter handle saying, he is ready for the arrest. Islamabad IGP Dr Akbar Nasir Khan, told Pakistani media outlets that the situation is under control. Meanwhile, the PTI shared photos of Imran Khan’s lawyer claiming he was injured in a scuffle during the arrest of the PTI chief.
