Tamil Nadu’s Higher Education Minister P. Viswanathan has come under intense scrutiny over several clips shared on social media. The footages have triggered strong reactions from opposition leaders and members of the public. Critics have questioned the minister's conduct, while the BJP has accused the ruling alliance of remaining silent on the issue. Viswanathan has defended himself, saying he was merely participating in celebrations after being invited by young attendees. 

The Kallazhagar Chithirai Festival is currently being celebrated in Madurai. As the final and most important part of this world-famous festival, Lord Kallazhagar will enter the Vaigai River. The Kallazhagar Temple, located at the foothills of the Alagar Hills in Thirumaliruncholai – also called Southern Tirupati and one of the 108 sacred Vaishnavite sites – is the center of the celebrations.
