US court blocks Trump from slashing NY funds over Manhattan toll program

On May 27, a US judge temporarily blocked the Transportation Department from cutting off federal funding to New York after the Trump administration tried to stop Manhattan’s new congestion pricing program, according to New York officials. The judge’s order came just before the government was set to deny approvals for New York projects, following a warning from Transportation Secretary Duffy. MTA CEO Janno Lieber said the judge wants a quick decision in the case and no federal pressure before that happens. The order will stay in place until June 9, according to Reuters. Lieber said Judge Liman wants to stop the “coercive threats” from the Trump administration and reach a fast resolution. New York started the congestion pricing program in January. It charges drivers a $9 toll during peak hours to enter Manhattan below 60th Street. The goal is to reduce traffic and raise money for public transit. New York State, the city, and the MTA are trying to stop the Trump administration from blocking the plan.
