Sandeshkhali Violence: Fact-finding members arrested en route to village

Six members of an independent fact-finding committee, on their way to Sandeshkhali, were arrested at Bhojerhat in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on February 25. Following the arrest, the committee members were brought to PHQ Lal Bazaar Kolkata. The Fact-Finding Committee members were stopped by police at Bhojerhat, South 24 Parganas, while they were proceeding to the trouble-torn Sandeshkhali area in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas to investigate alleged incidents of atrocities and Sandeshkhali violence on women there. Saikat Ghosh, Deputy Commissioner, Bhangar Division, Kolkata Police, said while speaking to the media, “We were requesting them to not cross from here, but they were trying to break the police barricade unlawfully. So, we had to arrest them under Preventive Sections. If there is information of a ‘breach of peace’, police can arrest them under preventive sections.” Narasimha Reddy, Former Chief Justice of Patna High Court, said, “We sat here but it seems they've a problem with this also. Now, we will seek the appointment of the governor and explain the situation to him. Later we'll talk about this to the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi...”

INS Chennai reaches home after rescuing crew members of hijacked Bulk Carrier

INS Chennai, which rescued the hijacked Bulk Carrier MV Lila Norfolk on January 5, reached Chennai on Feb 16. On Jan 05, the Indian naval warship reached the hijacked vessel MV Lila Norfolk off Somalia coast. As many as 21 crew members, including 15 Indians were onboard the ship which was hijacked by the pirates. The Indian Navy was quick to respond and rescued all the crew members. Navy’s elite commando unit MARCOS reached the vessel and initiated the “sanitisation” process. The rescued members hailed the Indian Navy’s efforts and a timely response.

Sandeshkhali Horror: 6-member committee formed by BJP to inquire cases

After violence broke out in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, BJP formed a six-member committee of Union Ministers, MPs. Committee members will visit Sandeshkhali and collect information about the alleged sexual harassment, violence against women. Tension simmered in the Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas district's Basirhat subdivision on Feb 13. BJP workers led by state party president Sukanta Majumdar protested against the alleged sexual harassment of women. Local women have been agitating over atrocities committed against them allegedly by TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh. Majumdar sustained injuries during the police lathicharge as a scuffle broke out between the police and party workers. On Feb 14, WB Governor, LOP Suvendu Adhikari reached Apollo Hospital to enquire about Sukanta Majumdar's health. The administration has imposed Sector 144 of CrPC in the area till February 19 to maintain law and order amid the ongoing tensions due to Sandeshkhali horror.

“Indian Navy Zindabad…” This is how rescued Pakistani-Iranian sailors thanked

Indian Defence officials on January 29 informed that the Indian Navy warship INS Sumitra rescued fishermen hijacked by Somali pirates. In the latest update the Indian Navy on January 31 shared a video of the rescue operation. In the video, the Pakistani-Iranian crew expressed gratitude and explained how pirates dumped their weapons after seeing the Indian Navy and they also raised Indian Navy zindabad . Later in the video, the crew chanted ‘All hail Indian Navy’ and ‘Thank you for saving our lives’The incident happened about 700 nautical miles west of Kochi in the Arabian Sea. The Iranian fishing vessel FV Iman was boarded with around 17 crew members which was hijacked by pirates. INS Sumitra intercepted the vessel and acted by the established SOPs to coerce the pirates for the safe release of the crew. Later, the FV was subsequently sanitized and released for onward transit. The latest attack came amid a series of attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on cargo vessels in the Red Sea and other crucial business routes
