India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on March 08 snubbed the ‘double standard allegations against India. He was told that India has not criticised Russia in the country’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine and people think of it as “double st andards” of India. To this, Jaishankar sharply replied and said, “We in India know better than almost any other country. Because immediately after our independence, we experienced aggression. We experienced an effort to change our boundaries and even today, parts of India are occupied by another country. But we did not see the world responds saying that there’s a great principle involved and therefore let us all go with India. Yes, today we are being told that there are principles involved. I wish I had seen that principle in play for the last 80 years. I have seen those principles cherry-picked when suits people and not when it does not suit people.” S Jaishankar’s Japan Visit is scheduled from March 6 to 8.

On the occasion of 75th Republic Day, the Srinagar District Administration on January 26 decorated the rooftops of 120 ‘Shikara’ boats on Dal Lake, in Tricolour. The ‘Shikara’ boats together showcased three colours of the National Flag, i.e. Saffron, white and green with an Ashoka Chakra in the middle.

Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) was officially renamed as the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library (PMML) Society with effect from 14th August. Over the renaming of the museum, a row erupted between Congress and BJP. Congress lashed the Modi Government’s decision of changing the name of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. While, BJP countered Congress’ attacks over renaming the museum. Earlier, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh had denounced the renaming of the museum. He had said that the government has a single point agenda of denying, distorting, defaming and destroying the Nehruvian legacy.

Preparations were underway at Kargil War Memorial in Ladakh on July 25 for the celebrations of Kargil Vijay Diwas. Notably, July 26 is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas every year to observe India’s victory over Pakistan in 1999. This year, India will celebrate 24th Kargil Vijay Diwas. Kargil War was one of the toughest wars fought in the most inhospitable conditions, both due to its geographical and climatic conditions. During the war, the Indian Army recaptured the strategic peaks of Tololing, Tiger Hill, and Point 4875, among others. A wreath-laying ceremony will take place on July 26 giving tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during Kargil War.

7/11 Mumbai train blasts
On July 11, 2006, a string of powerful bombs ripped through Mumbai's commuter trains system in the evening rush hour, killing nearly 200 people and bringing India's financial capital to a standstill. Seven blasts were triggered in the span of 11 minutes in the first-class suburban train compartments. The first bomb went off shortly after 6.20 pm in the Western Railway suburban train running from Churchgate to Borivali. The bomb exploded when the train was between Khar and Santacruz stations. Another bomb exploded at the same time in a local between Bandra and Khar Road. Most of the commuters in these trains were executives, businessmen, employees of government and private establishments and college students. Five more explosions occurred in Jogeshwari, Mahim Junction, Mira Road-Bhayander, Matunga-Mahim Junction and Borivali. G7 leaders have gathered for a summit in Japan. Japan currently holds the G7 presidency. The leaders visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on May 19 to pay tribute to the victims of the Hiroshima nuclear attack by laying wreaths. They also planted a tree. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida welcomed the G7 leaders.
