Odisha Train Accident: CBI arrests three railway employees in Balasore mishap

Days after the tragic Balasore triple train accident, CBI arrested three railways officials on July 07. The central probe agency said that the accused have been arrested under sections 304, 201 of CrPC. The arrested railways employees have been identified as Arun Kumar Mahanta, senior section engineer; Amir Khan, section engineer; technician Pappu Kumar. CBI in its investigation found that the accused railway employees were also involved in the tampering of evidence. The arrested accused will be presented in the competent court and CBI will demand custody. The Railway Board had recommended a CBI probe into the accident following which on June 06. The CBI has already registered a First Information Report (FIR) in this matter. The horrific incident involving Coromandel Express, Shalimar Express and goods train claimed 291 lives and injured over 1000.

Days after the frightening train accident which claimed lives of at least 275 people and left over 900 people injured the ill-fated Coromandel Express is all set to resume its services on June 07 as per its scheduled time. Railway’s CPRO Aditya Kumar Chaudhary on June 06 updated about the train timings. In a tragic 3-way accident, 2 passenger trains and a good train collided with each other near Bahanaga Railway Station in Balasore on June 02. Around 10-12 coaches of Coromandel Express derailed near Bahanaga Railway station and ‘infringed’ into the opposite track. Another train coming on the same track, side crashed into the derailed coaches of Coromandel Express and also got derailed.

Railway board gives details on mishap, explains ‘interlocking’ system

The railway board on June 4th held a press conference briefing the media on the Odisha train tragedy. Back in the day, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in a statement, had said that the cause of the Odisha train tragedy was "a change in electronic interlocking". While the exact details of the accident are yet to be ascertained with the report from the investigation board, the railway board officials explained the ‘interlocking’ system and dismissed the failure of the ‘Kavach’ system as the reason behind the accident.

Speaking on Coromandel Express Derailment, the Chief Secretary of Odisha Pradeep Jena on June 3 informed that 233* dead bodies have been recovered. He said, “So far around 900 passengers have been injured and are being treated in various hospitals in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Cuttack districts. So far, 233* dead bodies have been recovered. The search and rescue operation is going on. One bogie which is severely damaged is left; NDRF, ODRAF & Fire Service are still working to cut the bogie & try to recover the living or the dead.” *The death toll has risen to 238.

The accident took place near Bahanaga Bazar station when the train was on the way to Chennai from the Shalimar station. In view of train accident, Odisha CM, Naveen Patnaik has ordered for State Mourning for a day. No state celebration to take place on 3rd June throughout Odisha. In a tragic incident, an express train and a goods train met with an accident in Balasore on June 02. Around 10-12 coaches of Coromandel Express derailed near Bahanaga Railway station and ‘infringed’ into the opposite track. Another train coming on the same track, side crashed into the derailed coaches of Coromandel Express and also got derailed. According to the latest reports, several people are feared dead and over 300 people got injured in the mishap. The injured have been shifted to Soro CHC, Gopalpur CHC, and Khantapada PHC, and Bhadrak DHC. As many as 3 NDRF, 4 ODRAF teams, several fire services units, and nearly 100 ambulances have been rushed to the side. Special Relief Commissioner along with senior officers, DG Fire Services have been sent to the spot. Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also reached the SRC control room to monitor the situation. President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi also expressed their condolences and promptly took action to address the situation.

Bhiwandi Building Collapse: Eight dead, ten injured; CM, PM announce assistance

A 10-year-old ground-plus-three-storey building collapsed in a heap around 1pm on Saturday in Vardhman Compound in Valpada village in rural parts of Bhiwandi in Thane. The building housed godowns on the ground and first floor and four families in tenements on the top floor. 22 residents were believed to be trapped in the debris out of which, 10 injured are being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Bhiwandi. Eight people died in the incident. The residents were rescued with the help of the Thane Disaster Response Force personnel  National Disaster Response Force personnel. The rescue operation was called off after more than 45 hours of the incident. On Saturday night, Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde visited the IGM hospital after visiting the incident site, where he met with the injured. The CM also announced ₹5 lakh assistance to each of the kin of the deceased. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF to the heir of the deceased and the injured would be given Rs. 50,000.
