For the first time in the history of Independent India, defence exports touched a record Rs 21,083 crore in the financial year 2023-24. India’s defence exports saw a record growth of 32.5 pc over the last fiscal year when the figure was Rs 15,920 crore. The recent figures have indicated that the defence exports have grown by 31 times in the last 10 years. Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi called India’s defence sector growth a “monumental achievement”. The Prime Minister lauded the team’s hard work those who propelled India onto the global stage in defence. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh hailed PM Modi’s visionary leadership and congratulated all stakeholders. The defence industry, including private sector, has made tremendous efforts in achieving the highest-ever defence exports. The private sector and the DPSUs have contributed about 60 per cent and 40 per cent, respectively.

At the HAL Avionics Expo 2023 in Delhi on Dec 07, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan stated that amid the changing geo-political, geo-economic as well and technological landscape, it is essential that modern militaries are ready to fight. He said, “We all are in the midst of a change and transformation, it’s not only geo-political change but also geo-economic as well as technological changes. In such an era, modern militaries must be ready to fight, while they prepare themselves for future conflicts. To keep pace with this change, the military and scientific community, developers, and entrepreneurs must identify key technological trends so that we remain ahead of the curve.”

In a bid to further strengthen operational preparedness, India is expected to allow defence forces to acquire critical equipment under emergency acquisition powers. Under this, Indian forces can acquire any new or in-service equipment on fast-track basis without the MoD's approval. The grant of emergency acquisition powers to forces is expected to come after a high-level Defence Ministry meeting. The meeting will be held on Monday. The powers were first granted to Indian forces post-Uri surgical strikes in 2016. It has helped to tackle the military standoff with China. In the previous approvals, Indian forces had power to sign deals for equipment worth Rs 300 crore. The products are expected to be delivered within a period of three months to one year. Earlier, Indian forces acquired these equipment on a fast-track basis. 'Heron' unmanned aerial vehicles have now been deployed in Ladakh as well as in northeast. 'HAMMER' missiles can hit hardened ground attack-guide bunkers from a long distance. 'Sig Sauer' assault rifles have been inducted into all three forces now. Spike Anti-tank guided missiles. Indian forces will now acquire both indigenous as well as foreign manufactured products.
