Mumbai rains: CM Shinde urges people to stay at home amid heavy downpour

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on July 25, directed Raigad's collector to aid people affected by heavy rainfall and floods. He urged everyone to avoid unnecessary travel due to water on roads and in homes in Pune. With Khadakwasla Dam and surrounding areas experiencing heavy rain, he assured readiness with NDRF, SDRF, and Army teams on standby. Due to heavy Mumbai rains, the city faces an 'orange' alert, and efforts include 222 water pumps to clear flooded areas. Railway tracks in Kurla and Ghatkopar are affected, and efforts are underway to reopen the Andheri subway. Shinde appealed for cooperation and vigilance from residents and officials alike.

On July 25, 2024, Mumbai rains turned out to be fatal and caused substantial disruptions and hazards throughout the city. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring regions, predicting extremely heavy rainfall. The non-stop rain led to widespread waterlogging in areas such as Kurla, Andheri, BKC, and Chembur. The heavy  rain significantly impacted transportation in Mumbai. Local train services are operating at reduced speeds due to poor visibility, and several trains were suspended. Flight operations at Mumbai airport are also heavily affected, with numerous flights delayed, diverted, or canceled.The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recorded 46 incidents of fallen trees and branches, six short circuits, and eight cases of property damage.

 In a tragic incident, a 38-year-old engineer from Palava City in Dombivli took his own life by jumping off the Atal Setu bridge. The victim, identified as Srinivas Karuturi, reportedly faced financial difficulties, as per his wife's statement to the police. Srinivas, who worked as an engineer in a private firm, drove his Tata Nexon car to the bridge and stopped there before jumping off around 12:35 pm on July 24. Police have initiated a search operation to recover his body, with coastal guards and local fishermen aiding in the effort. Srinivas' identity was confirmed through his Aadhaar card found in his wallet inside the parked car, which also contained an identity card from a construction firm where he previously worked. This incident follows a similar tragedy on July 18, when a businessman from Ghatkopar ended his life by jumping off the Bandra-Worli Sea Link after video calling his son to inform him of his intentions. His body was later found after a three hour search operation carried out by fire brigade.

Sindhudurg in the Konkan region also remained on yellow alert. The situation prompted authorities to advise caution and preparedness across the affected areas.

Massive waterlogging was witnessed at King’s Circle in Mumbai. Visuals of the waterlogged roads from the King's Circle area surfaced online wherein authorities in reflective rain gear could be seen giving directions to the driver to steer him clear of a dangerous spot. Pedestrians and vehicles crossed heavily waterlogged streets at the King’s Circle. The latest forecast predicts heavy to very heavy rains over Mumbai and MMR areas likely in next 48 hours which may create waterlogging as rain will be consistently moderate to heavy for at least next 24-36 hours.
