Manmohan Singh attends discussion on Delhi Services Bill in Rajya Sabha

Former PM Manmohan Singh came to the Parliament to participate in the crucial Rajya Sabha session on August 07. The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was being discussed. 90-year-old former PM Manmohan Singh was seen sitting on a wheelchair in the Parliament. The Congress party has issued a three-line whip for its MPs, urging them to be present in the Rajya Sabha. Home Minister Amit Shah moved the GNCT of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, for passage in the House. The Bill was passed after a division in which 131 MPs voted in favour of the legislation and 102 against it. The Opposition members moved a resolution disapproving the ordinance brought by the government in May this year. The bill empowers the Central Government to make rules in connection with the affairs of the Government of the NCT of Delhi. Amit Shah also lashed out at Congress, reminding that the government was not making amendments to impose “Emergency”.

Delhi Services Bill: Raghav Chadha accused of forged signatures

Five Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Rajya Sabha have lodged complaints about their alleged unauthorised inclusion in a proposed Select Committee on the Delhi Services Bill by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha. This move has triggered a call for a Privilege Motion against Chadha, stirring debates and discussions within the parliamentary framework. Home Minister Amit Shah has also accused Chadha of fraudulent activity. He called for an investigation by the parliament's Privilege Committee into this matter. The proposal for the creation of the Select Committee itself was made by Chadha, with the intention of subjecting the Delhi Services Bill to thorough scrutiny. In response to the allegations, Chadha maintained his readiness to address the situation. Chadha's effort to send the bill to a select committee was eventually defeated by a voice vote.

On May 19th, an ordinance was issued by the Centre to set up a National Capital Civil Service Authority, bringing back executive control over matters related to services to its domain. Kejriwal embarked on a nationwide tour from May 23rd to seek support from the Opposition parties against the Ordinance.

Arvind Kejriwal meets Sharad Pawar to seek support against centre's ordinance

A day after meeting Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre in Mumbai on Thursday. Punjab CM and Aam Aadmi Party leader Bhagwant Mann accompanied him. Other party leaders, including Atishi and Raghav Chadha, also met the NCP chief. Arvind Kejriwal arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday evening. The meetings are a part of the leader's nationwide tour to garner support for the AAP’s fight against the Centre’s ordinance. Addressing a joint press conference in Mumbai, Kejriwal said that elected governments are not being allowed to work by using Ordinances, which is “not good for the country”. Pawar, speaking at the press conference, said that it is the time to “fight for parliamentary democracy”, and asked all non-BJP parties to support Arvind Kejriwal.
