G20 Summit 2023: UN Secy-Gen lauds India’s G20 presidency

India’s ‘diplomatic triumph’ was witnessed by the world during the G20 Summit 2023 held in New Delhi. The voices of the countries of the South were amplified across the globe under India’s G20 presidency. Now, UN Secretary-General lauded India’s efforts to become a voice of the Global South and bring nations on one platform.Amid geopolitical differences, G20 nations reached a 100 per cent consensus and adopted the New Delhi Declaration. In a landmark decision during G20 Summit 2023, the African Union became a permanent member of the group. Throughout its presidency, India has been making a strong pitch for the countries which are not a part of the G20 grouping. Nine nations, which are not a part of the group, were invited for the G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi. Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain and UAE were invited to the G20 New Delhi Summit.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday began a state visit to India, after participating in the G20 Summit over the weekend, to review bilateral ties and cooperation in areas ranging from energy to security.

AU Chairperson Azali Assoumani on inclusion as G20 permanent member

The head of the African Union (AU) was moved to tears when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the regional bloc's inclusion in G20 forum during the 18th summit in New Delhi on Saturday. On 9th September, Prime Minister Modi had announced that the African Union (AU) had become the second group, following the European Union (EU), to secure permanent membership in the global forum. He underscored the importance of the AU's inclusion, emphasizing its role in amplifying the voice of the Global South and providing it with the platform it rightly deserves. While speaking to the media persons on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, the President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Azali Assoumani said that India is the 5th superpower in the world, and India is ahead of China now.

PM Narendra Modi on September 10 handed over the G20 Presidency gavel to Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Last year, Indonesia handed over the G20 presidency to India at Bali G20 Leaders’ Summit. On Dec 1 last year, India assumed the presidency of the G20 Summit 2023 and about 200 meetings related to G20 were organised in 60 Indian cities across the country.

The United States Secretary of the Treasury Janet L Yellen said that the G20 summit 2023 has been extremely effective under India’s leadership in spite of the problems caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and Russia’s general absence from the G20 initiatives. “It is important to emphasise that the G20 is a prime solution to the global challenges. We see it as a premier organisation on a global basis that is taking on critical challenges facing the global economy and particularly the global South. I believe the G20, in spite of obvious problems due to Russia's war against Ukraine and Russia's general absence from G20 initiatives, has been extremely effective, especially under India's leadership. Our goals for the G20 have coincided closely with those of India. We have tackled very important challenges. I think we have had considerable success in changing the way the entire multilateral development system is operating,” said Janet L Yellen on September 08.

UK PM Rishi Sunak will be received by Minister of State for Consumer Affairs Ashwini Kumar Choubey. Japanese PM Fumio Kishida will be received by Minister of State for Consumer Affairs Ashwini Kumar Choubey. Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina will be received by Minister of State for Railways Darshana Jardosh. Italy PM Giorgia Meloni will be received by Minister of State for Agriculture Shobha Karandlaje. China's Premier Li Qiang will be welcomed by Minister VK Singh on September 08. Australian PM Anthony Albanese will be received by Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar. French President Emmanuel Macron will be received by State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will be received by Minister of State for MSME Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma. UAE President HH Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan will be received by MoS for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai. The summit will be hosted at the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. India assumed the G20 presidency on Dec 1 last year and about 200 meetings related to G20 were organised in 60 cities across the country.

B20 Summit: India officially hands over B20 presidency to Brazil

On August 27, India handed over the B20 (Business 20) presidency to Brazil. The Business 20 (B20) is the official G20 dialogue forum with the global business community. The presidency was officially handed over to Rafael Lucchesi, Director General of SENAI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended the B20 Summit. Earlier in the day, EAM Jaishankar also addressed the Business 20 Summit. The three-day summit was held from August 25 to August 27. It was attended by over 1,500 delegates from about 55 countries.

G20 Mumbai: Delegates witness journey of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Gateway

Delegates from G-20's 3rd Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group on May 22 visited Mumbai's iconic monument Gateway of India and Taj palace hotel. Delegates witnessed an enthralling performance by folk artists, dahi handi, traditional dhol and cultural Marathi Lavani. A special digital light and sound show was also screened on the walls of the Gateway of India. The show provided a glimpse of the history of Maharashtra depicting the valour of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's life journey. Delegates who came from different countries hit the floor with traditional dance and played Dhols and Tashas. The G20 3rd Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group Meeting concluded on May 22. The meeting focussed on aspects related to emerging science, technology and innovation, challenges associated with effective and inclusive policy and governance, and establishing finance mechanisms to support national and regional Blue Economy endeavours.
