Jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari passed away on Mar 28 following a cardiac arrest. Mukhtar Ansari took his last breath at Banda Medical College Hospital in Uttar Pradesh. Following his death, people in large numbers gathered outside the politician’s residence in Ghazipur. The police also conducted a flag march and issued alerts across the state to prevent any untoward incidents following Ansari's death. Security arrangements have been beefed up in several parts of UP after the demise. However, Umar Ansari, the son of Mukhtar Ansari, alleged conspiracy in father’s death.

As India gears up for upcoming Lok Sabha elections, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, while addressing at 3rd Summit for Democracy on March 20, hailed India’s festival of democracy. He said, “With 968 million registered voters, 15 million elections officials and 1.2 million polling booths the upcoming 18th edition of National Election is the largest electoral logistics exercise that this planet has ever witnessed. Well indeed, this is the celebration of democracy, the mammoth exercise involves navigating through remote villages and challenging geographical terrains, incorporating measures to enable our senior citizens and differently-abled persons to participate fully in the electoral process.”

PM Modi implemented CAA on March 11. Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri took a sharp jibe at the political leaders opposing Citizenship Amendment Act. He said, “There are persecuted minorities in some of our neighbouring countries- Buddhists, Christians, Jains, Hindus, Sikhs, among others... In 1947, the population of Hindus in Pakistan was 24% which stands at 1% today. In erstwhile East Pakistan, there was a certain Hindu population but now there are just 7%. Some of these people who came to India before 2014 are being given a right. The people who are suddenly worried that these few immigrants will take away all jobs and resources need to know that our population is 140 crores and only 1000 people have registered on the portal so far. The number of people who had applied for citizenship under the Citizenship Act of 1955 is also just 4000. What is this completely distorted picture which is being presented? This is not about religion.

In a major Parliament security breach, two persons jumped into Lok Sabha from the visitors’ gallery, and triggered a commotion on December 13. The Maternal Uncle of one of the accused, spoke to the media in Lucknow. Defending his niece Pradeep Sharma, he said that Sagar had been pulled into a conspiracy. He further added that people holding big positions have lured him to make this act. He went on to say that the issue should be thoroughly investigated. Home Minister of Haryana Anil Vij spoke on the situation in Nuh after state witnessed violence that erupted between two groups on July 31.During an interaction with the media, he said that everything was pre-planned, as people ascended hills around the temples, had lathis, and gathered at entry points. He further stated that several rounds were fired and that some persons had arranged weapons to disturb the peace, law and order in the region. In addition, he stated that the government does not want to rush to a conclusion without conducting a comprehensive investigation, and that internet connections would be restored after the situation in the region improves.

Reacting over Nuh violence, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar suspected a 'conspiracy' behind the clashes that broke out between two groups on Monday. Khattar, while speaking to the media called the incident 'unfortunate' and said that clashes broke out at several places and that a big conspiracy seems behind the violence. A total of five people have died including two home guards who were shot dead after a clash broke out on Monday. Post the clashes between two groups in Nuh, a curfew has been imposed in the area. Section 144 has been imposed and mobile internet 888 services have been temporarily suspended in the district.

Some of them sit proudly in this chamber and one of them is behind me (US Vice-President Kamala Harris). I have been told that the ‘samosa caucus’ is now the flavour of the House. I hope it grows and brings the full diversity of Indian cuisine here,” said Prime Minister Modi at the joint session. ‘Samosa Caucus’, named after the popular snack, refers to a group of elected officials in the US Congress who have South Asian ancestry, particularly Indian.
