Pew Research claims - 98% of Indian Muslims are free to practice their religion

A recent report by Pew Research Center claimed that 98% of India’s Muslims are free to practice their religion in the nation. The remaining 2% said they were “not too free” to practice their religion, with virtually no one answering “not at all free”. As per its website, Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that talks about the issues, attitudes, trends shaping the world. In an Opinion piece by Washington Examiner, American Sociologist Salvatore Babones quoted this info from Pew Research. He compared the situation of minorities in India and the US, from where several reports questioning India’s democracy are published. Notably, US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) in its annual report proposed to blacklist India. USCIRF recommended 17 countries (including India) to the State Department to be designated as ‘Countries of Particular Concern’. As per Pew Research Center’s survey, 95% of Muslims said that they were “proud to be Indian”.

US questions India’s religious freedom ahead of PM’s first visit to the state

 Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first state visit, the US published a report criticising India. The United States has condemned India in its 2022 Report on International Religious Freedom. Recently, US Commission on International Religious Freedom proposed to blacklist India. The commission even urged the Biden government to impose targeted sanctions on Indian government agencies. USCIRF added India to the list of 17 Countries of Particular Concern (CPCs). Ministry of External Affairs had rejected the report published by US Commission on International Religious Freedom. Calling out such indices, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had termed them ‘mind game’.

No provision of reservation on the basis of religion: Amit Shah in Karnataka

Union minister Amit Shah on Monday gave justification for scrapping the 4 per cent Muslim reservation in Karnataka saying it was “unconstitutional” and blamed the previous Congress party who introduced it for appeasement and consolidation of the Muslim vote bank. In an interview, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that there was no provision in the constitution for reservation on the basis of religion. Targeting Congress over the issue,  Shah said that the party “brought this reservation for appeasement and consolidating vote bank.”
