Haldwani violence: “Not religious structure…” says Nainital DM Vandana Singh

Haldwani violence: A violence broke out in Banbhoolpura area of Uttarakhand’s Haldwani on February 08. As violence rocked Haldwani, DM Vandana Singh held detailed press conference on Feb 09. Nainital DM Vandana Singh clarified that demolished property is “not a religious structure”. She said, “This was not an isolated activity to target a particular property only. This drive has been going on for a long time in different areas of Haldwani. It is an empty property that has two structures. Which are not registered as religious structure or has been given any such recognition. Some people call it a Madrasa, but on papers, there is no such existence. We vacated it and notice was pasted. The area is called ‘Malik ka Bagicha’, but in papers, it is not registered like that. It has been registered as the property of the Municipal Council.” Notably, 4 persons were killed and over 100 police personnel sustained injuries in the violence. Internet services in the area have been suspended and Section 144 has been imposed in Haldwani. US questions India’s religious freedom ahead of PM’s first visit to the state

 Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first state visit, the US published a report criticising India. The United States has condemned India in its 2022 Report on International Religious Freedom. Recently, US Commission on International Religious Freedom proposed to blacklist India. The commission even urged the Biden government to impose targeted sanctions on Indian government agencies. USCIRF added India to the list of 17 Countries of Particular Concern (CPCs). Ministry of External Affairs had rejected the report published by US Commission on International Religious Freedom. Calling out such indices, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had termed them ‘mind game’.

The Congress party on Tuesday released its manifesto for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections, in which it has stated that it is committed to taking firm and decisive action against individuals and organizations spreading hatred against communities on the grounds of caste and religion. The party's manifesto includes a promise to ban organizations like the Bajrang Dal and the Popular Front of India, stating that they violate the law and Constitution and promote enmity and hatred among communities. The manifesto was released by the party president Mallikarjun Kharge in the presence of former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, KPCC President DK Shivakumar, and Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera. The manifesto called 'Sarva Janangada Shanthiya Thota' speaks of five guarantees, ie. Gruha Jyothi, Gruha Lakshmi, Anna Bhagya, Yuva Nidhi and Shakti. Reacting to this PM Modi in his rally in Karnataka's Vijaynagar said congress wants to lock up those who worship lord hanuman.
