Shaksgam Valley: India lodges protest over Chinese activities in Shaksgam Valley

India on May 02 lodged a strong protest against the reports of Chinese activities in Shaksgam Valley situated in POK. Shooting down media reports of ‘construction activities by China in Shaksgam Valley’ MEA said that It is a part of India. MEA further said that New Delhi never accepted the China-Pakistan boundary agreement of 1963. The issue of Shaksgam Valley comes amid the India-China border dispute along the Line of Actual Control. Indian and Chinese soldiers came at a loggerhead at friction points in eastern Ladakh in 2020 at LAC. The Shaksgam Valley, or the Trans Karakoram Tract is a strategically key region is part of the Hunza-Gilgit Region of PoK. It is bordered by the Xinjiang Province of China to the north, the northern areas of PoK to its west, south & Siachen Glacier region to the east. The Shaksgam Valley was ceded to China by Pakistan in 1963 when both countries signed a boundary pact to settle their differences.

Jhelum boat accident: Boat capsizes in J&K's Jhelum River, 4 dead

In a tragic incident, a boat carrying school children capsized in the Jhelum river in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir on April 16. The Jhelum boat accident killed 4 people. The Srinagar Administration has launched a rescue operation in the area. A State Disaster Response Force team was also deployed. At least six persons including four children have died. Meanwhile, 4 bodies have been recovered, while others are missing. The boat which has capsized was ferrying children from Gandbal to Batwara in Srinagar. Continuous rains over last two days have led to an increase in the water levels of several water bodies, including Jhelum. Watch video

Hit-and-run law: Massive protest erupts across India against Central government

Bus and truck drivers on Jan 01, held protests across several states of India against the new hit-and-run law. This triggered difficulty for commuters travelling to different places. Private bus and truck drivers on January 01, enforced a 'chakka jam' across Haryana. Members of an organisation representing the drivers also staged a protest on the streets of Bhopal at the Board Office intersection. A similar protest also broke out in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur, where bus drivers staged a demonstration against the new central law. With the buses anchored in their sheds, regular commuters and interstate passengers bore the brunt of the protests. The ongoing strike has impacted the movement of thousands of vehicles across the protesting states. Notably, the new central law attracts a 7-10-year prison sentence for drivers falling foul of it.
