In a blow to the Uddhav Thackeray faction, the Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stay the Election Commission’s decision to allot the Shiv Sena party name and symbol to the Eknath Shinde-led group, recognising it as the real Shiv Sena based on its strength in the Lok Sabha and the Maharashtra assembly. A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala, declined to restrain the Shinde group from taking over the assets and bank accounts of the Shiv Sena.

On Monday, after a meeting with his MLAs, Thackeray said: “Everything has been stolen from me. The name and symbol of our party have been stolen but the name ‘Thackeray’ cannot be stolen. We have moved the Supreme Court against the decision given by the Election Commission. Thackeray said if the current scenario in Maharashtra was not stopped, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections could turn out to be the last in the country. After that, there will be anarchy, he added.

Uddhav Thackeray, president of the Shiv Sena, submitted a list of three names and symbols for his fraction to Election Commission. “We have submitted three symbols - Trishul, Rising Sun and Mashaal,” Uddhav said. “For the party names we have suggested Shiv Sena (Balasaheb Thackeray), Shiv Sena (Balasaheb Prabodhankar Thackeray), Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).” Thackeray added.
