Pressure is mounting on the Mamata Banerjee Government as protests over SSC Recruitment scam intensify. Supreme Court struck down the SSC recruitment process, calling it “tainted from start to finish’. 26,000 teachers have lost jobs in one of the largest recruitment scams in West Bengal’s history. Following the verdict, mass protests erupted outside Bikash Bhavan in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area. The protests turned violent as police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
16 May,2025 09:37 PM ISTIn a big setback to the Mamata Government, the Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta HC order to cancel the appointment of over 25,000 staff in Bengal schools by SSC. The Mamata Banerjee government is under attack by the BJP. It has been alleged that unqualified candidates secured jobs by paying money to people linked to TMC. BJP MP Sambit Patra taking a jibe at Mamata government, said, “The way Mamata Banerjee and her government have unleashed corruption in West Bengal and given it a free hand, today, lakhs of people have been affected by it... In the teachers' recruitment, corruption was to the extent that people went to the court, and this was called a bribe for jobs scam...”

These young students are preparing to take their SSC exams, and for many of them, it’s the first time they will attempt the English language paper. For students like Salik, learning English has never been easy. But thanks to the incredible dedication of the teachers at TEACH (Training and Educational Centre for Hearing Impaired), these students have been given a chance they never had before. TEACH is a Mumbai-based charitable trust committed to providing higher education opportunities to students with hearing and speech impairments. Through patient, personalized training, they’ve helped these students learn English, a subject that many thought would remain out of their reach. Aman Sharma, co-founder of TEACH, discussed the hurdles and limitations that deaf and mute students face in accessing higher education.
