SIMI Ban: Modi Government bans terror group Students Islamic Movement of India

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Jan 29 extended the ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India. The Central Government banned SIMI for another five years as an 'unlawful association' under the UAPA. Ministry of Home Affairs took action by exercising the powers conferred by the provisions of UAPA. MHA had declared SIMI as unlawful association on Sept 27, 2001, and it later kept on extending the ban. SIMI “continuing to be involved in fomenting terrorism, disturbing peace, communal harmony in India”. Many criminal cases have been registered against SIMI and its members under various sections of IPC. Home Minister Amit Shah said that SIMI ban is part of PM Modi Government's 'zero tolerance' policy.

Later, he went on to say "No one is yet born to stop him”. On the controversial Akbaruddin Owaisi’s speech, AIMIM Chief Asaddudin Owaisi backed his brother Akbaruddin Owaisi. Asaduddin Owaisi demanded the Election Commission (EC) to initiate an inquiry as to why his brother was asked to stop speaking at the rally. Akbaruddin Owaisi is a candidate from the Chandrayangutta constituency. Telangana will go to polls in a single phase on November 30.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on June 13 rejected Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s claim that the Indian government put pressure on the microblogging platform to block accounts covering the farmers’ protests terming it as an “an outright lie” and “an attempt to brush out the very dubious period” of the social media company’s history. He said, “What he has said is an outright lie. Twitter is a company that believed that it was not necessary for it to comply with Indian laws. Govt of India has been very clear from the beginning that all companies that operate in India have to comply with Indian laws.”
