Following the Rouse Avenue Court’s verdict on Arvind Kejriwal’s judicial custody in the Delhi excise policy case till April 15, BJP held a press conference in Delhi on April 01. Implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act triggered a wave of celebration among the refugees living in Majnu Ka Tila area of Delhi. Celebrations erupted in the Majnu ka Tilla area as the Centre announced to notify CAA’s rules. After years of delay, Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 has been finally implemented in India. The Union Home Ministry has notified rules for implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on March 11, days ahead of LS Polls 2024. Home Minister Amit Shah, on multiple occasions, said that CAA rules would be notified ahead of the Lok Sabha elections to be held in April-May. Since 2020, MHA has been regularly seeking extensions from Parliamentary committees to continue process of framing rules associated with it. Following the passage of CAA by Parliament in Dec 2019 and its subsequent Presidential assent, significant uproar erupted in various parts of country. Over a hundred individuals lost their lives either during protests or due to police action subsequent to passage of law in Parliament. Notably, TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, has been opposing the CAA which also included a massive uproar in WB. In a big setback to the faction led by Sharad Pawar, the Election Commission on February 06 settled the dispute in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in favour of the faction led by the petitioner Ajit Pawar. Celebration took over at Ajit Pawar Camp, as EC settled dispute in NCP. The poll panel has given the NCP name and symbol to the faction led by Ajit Pawar in a significant decision that has a bearing on the forthcoming polls. The decision was taken after more than 10 hearings spread over more than six months. Maharashtra Dy CM and petitioner Ajit Pawar welcomed the decision and expressed gratitude to EC for the decision. Meanwhile, NCP Sharad Pawar Faction leader Supriya Sule alleged an “Adrishya Shakti” behind the EC’s decision. Shiva Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi called the development “Sponsored, planned and executed by Central Govt”. Notably, test of majority in legislative wing found favour in the circumstance of the case, where both groups have been found to be working outside party constitution and organizational elections.

Pushkar Singh Dhami-led Uttarakhand government has taken big step to implement the Uniform Civil Code. In a landmark decision, the Uttarakhand cabinet approved a draft report related to UCC on February 04. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the UCC bill will be tabled in the upcoming Assembly session. The Uniform Civil Code proposes uniform civil laws for all communities in the state of Uttarakhand. If implemented, Uttarakhand will become the first Indian state to adopt UCC after independence. UCC will provide a legal framework for uniform marriage, divorce, land for all citizens, irrespective of their religion. The passage of UCC bill will mark fulfillment of a major poll promise made by BJP to the people of the state.
