EAM S Jaishankar held a delegation level meeting with Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on March 29 in Delhi. In his opening remark during delegation meet with Ukraine FM, EAM Jaishankar said that a very substantial agenda for discussions has been made. He further said, “In recent months, we have had interactions at various levels, I am glad to see some of our bilateral mechanisms have also met and this has created certain momentum in our bilateral relationship. Today, after this discussion, we look forward also to the meeting of the intergovernmental commission. Vladimir Putin warns of World War 3 in election victory speech

Vladimir Putin won the Russian Presidential Elections with nearly 88 per cent votes. While addressing Russian citizens, the newly elected President Putin warned of World War III. Direct conflict between Russia, NATO would mean the world would be “one step away” from World War III. The Ukraine conflict has triggered deepest crisis in Moscow's relations with West since 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Putin has often warned of the risks of nuclear war but says he has never felt the need to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. Elections in Russia came just over two years since the full-scale conflict broke out between Ukraine, Russia. It has been considered as one of the Europe’s deadliest conflict since the World War II. The chair of the central election commission in Moscow said Putin won a record 88 pc of the vote. He received more votes in comparison to the 2018 Elections where he bagged 76.69 per cent of the total votes counted. Vladimir Putin was first elected as the President in 2000 and re-elected in 2004, 2012, 2018 and 2024 respectively.

US President Joe Biden has blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the death of Alexei Navalny who was a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and was found dead in Arctic Jail. As per the Russian Prison service, Navalny died after a walk at the “Polar Wolf” Arctic penal colony. US President Joe Biden said that he was “not surprised” by the news of Navalny’s death. Alexei Navalny, serving death sentence on multiple corruption charges, was seen as the leading opposition figure against President Putin. Navalny rose to prominence more than a decade ago by speaking publicly against corruption in Russia and used to organise major anti-Kremlin protests.

Jailed Russian Opposition leader Alexei Navalny And President Putin critic dies

Prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Alexei Navalny died in a prison on Feb 16. The 47-year-old Russian Opposition leader was serving a three-decade jail term was found dead at the Artic jail. As per the Russian Prison service, Navalny died after a walk at the “Polar Wolf” Arctic penal colony. The Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District said in a statement that Navalny felt unwell after a walk. Raising suspicion over Navalny’s death news, his wife Yulia Navalnaya said that it is difficult for her to believe the reports as ‘Putin and his govt lie incessantly’. Navalny’s death news comes as President Putin prepares for Russian Presidential Elections aiming to extend his rule till 2030. Earlier in 2020, Navalny was poisoned during a flight to Moscow in 2020 and was rushed to Germany for urgent treatment. Navalny returned to Russia in 2021 and got arrested over fraud and extremism charges and was sentenced to 9 years in jail. Modi-Putin Conversation: PM Modi dials Russian President Putin

Days after Russian Prez Vladimir Putin on Dec 27, invited his “Dear Friend” Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Russia, PM Modi on January 15 dialed Putin for a “useful exchange of views on various regional and global issues.” Talking to ‘X’, PM Modi shared about the Modi-Putin conversation. PM Modi and Prez Putin agreed to develop a roadmap to strengthen India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. PM Modi also conveyed his best wishes for Russia’s Presidency of BRICS in 2024 and assured of India’s full support. Further, the two leaders agreed to remain in touch. Notably, EAM Dr S Jaishankar visited Russia from Dec 25-29 as part of ongoing high-level exchanges between the two sides. On December 27, President Putin invited PM Modi to visit Russia addressing him as a “dear friend”. Notably, since the signing of the “Declaration on the India-Russia Strategic Partnership” in October 2000. India-Russia ties have acquired qualitatively new character with enhanced levels of cooperation in almost all areas of the bilateral relationship.

Russian President Vladimir Putin invites ‘Dear Friend’ Modi to Russia

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on December 27. Both leaders held bilateral talks during which Russian Prez Putin called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘dear friend’ and invited him to Russia. Vladimir Putin said, “Despite all the turmoil happening worldwide, the relationship with our true friends in Asia-India has been progressing incrementally. Regarding the situation in Ukraine, many times I advised him of how things have been going there and I know that he is willing to do his utmost...We will be glad to see our dear friend, Prime Minister Modi paying a visit to Russia...Please tell him that we expect him here. I know that India, next year will have a busy political schedule (general elections). We wish our friends success in that.”Earlier in the day, Jaishankar also met Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and held discussions on a wide range of global issues Indo-Pacific, Ukraine conflict as well as Gaza. Notably, Jaishankar is on a four-day visit to Russia from December 25-29.

Vladimir Putin Will Be Running For 2024 Presidential Polls

On December 8, 2023, Russian Prez Vladimir Putin confirmed that he will be running for the presidential polls for a fifth term. Vladimir Putin's current presidential term expires on May 7 of next year and the next presidential election is slated for March 17, 2024. Putin served as the Russian President from 2000 to 2008 and has been holding the post since 2012 in two successive terms. Putin also served as the Russian Prime Minister from 2008 to 2012. A constitutional amendment in 2021 allows Putin to run for two more six-year terms and possibly stay in power till 2036, which will make him the longest-serving Russian leader surpassing Joseph Stalin. Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 07 once again heaped praise on Prime Minister Modi. He stated that PM Modi cannot be intimidated or forced to make decisions that are contrary to Indian interests. President Putin also lauded PM Modi’s tough posturing and stance for defending the country’s national interest. Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 06 arrived in Abu Dhabi for his first visit. With jets flying past, camel cavalry and gun salutes, the Russian Prez was accorded a grand welcome upon his arrival. Notably, this is Putin’s first trip to the Middle East region since the Ukraine War began in Feb 2022. Russian President Putin urges Israel, Hamas to minimize civilian casualties

The all-out-war of Israel against the Palestinian terror group Hamas entered day 6 on October 12. In retaliation to Hamas’ atrocities on Israeli soil, Israel Defence Forces continued to pummel Palestinian terror assets in Gaza. Meanwhile, Russian President Putin expressed his concern over the loss of civilian lives. He also urged both sides to aim for minimum loss of civilian population including women, children. Russian Prez’s remarks come at a time when Hamas’ indiscriminate massacring of children in Israel was confirmed by US Prez Biden. Hamas launched a "surprise attack" on Israel on October 07, firing a barrage of rockets into the country. In retaliation, Israel is leaving no stone unturned to avenge the death of Israelis killed by Hamas terror group. As per Israel Defence Forces, the number of Israelis killed during Hamas' invasion over the weekend rose to 1,200.
