Gyanvapi Row: Vishnu Shankar Jain demands withdrawal of stay on ASI survey

The Gyanvapi row took fresh turn after ASI report was made public on Jan 24 on direction of Varanasi district court. Hindu side Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain on Jan 25 claimed existence of Hindu Temple prior to construction of the existing structure. He cited ASI’s “conclusive finding” in the report which brought about elation amongst the Hindu side petitioner and lawyers. Meanwhile, Jain on January 29 filled an application in SC demanding withdrawal of stay order on survey given on 19 May 2023. He said ASI should be allowed to conduct a study and feature study of the 'Wazukhana' area.

India, however, putting rumours to rest said that a discussion to find "mutually workable solution" was done in Male. The two sides also agreed to hold the next meeting of the High-Level Core Group in India on a mutually convenient date. Notably, the diplomatic row was triggered between India and Maldives after 3 Maldivian leaders posted derogatory remarks against PM Modi mocking him over his recent trip to Lakshadweep. The matter was strongly raised by India, with Male and top opposition leaders of the island nation slamming the ruling establishment over the row. Further, the Maldives is facing a boycott from Indian tourists, one of its biggest sources of tourism income, following the incident.

Amit Shah said the bills will encourage the use of technology in giving justice to people. He said "mob-lynching" had been included as an offence in the bills.

Mumbai sizzles as monsoon withdraws

As the southwest monsoon bids adieu to Mumbai and its adjoining areas, the mercury level is expected to climb, ushering in a summer-like feeling. Meteorologists and weather experts anticipate not only increased temperatures owing to the monsoon withdrawal but also a gradual decline in air quality during this transition. According to the forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city and suburbs will witness intense heat next week. According to IMD’s weekly weather forecast, the maximum temperature is likely to rise up to 32 degrees Celsius from October 9 to 13. After that, there will be some decrease in temperature. The maximum temperatures recorded at the Santacruz and Colaba observatories were 35.9 and 33 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, relative humidity at both weather stations was 71 per cent and 81 per cent, respectively.

Malikhh resumes railway duty, dismisses rumors of withdrawing from protests

Sakshi Malik on Monday denied withdrawing from the ongoing wrestlers' protest against -WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. She has joined back her position in the Northern Railway. The development comes two days after the wrestlers met Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence. The meeting was held late on Saturday as the wrestlers raised their demand for WFI chief Brij Bhushan’s arrest. Satyawrat Kadian, the husband Sakshi Malik, said the wrestlers’ meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah held on Saturday was inconclusive. Bajrang Punia, another wrestler protesting in solidarity with Sakshi Malik, who has also reportedly resumed his Railway duty, also tweeted about this.

Former Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi Nripendra Misra on May 22 said that the PM was not keen on the introduction of the Rs 2,000 notes but went along with the advice of his team. “PM Modi was not at all in favour of Rs 2000 notes. But, as demonetisation was to be done in a limited time, he gave reluctant permission for it. PM never considered Rs 2000 note as a note of the poor, he knew Rs 2000 has hoarding value instead of the transactional value,” said Nripendra Misra.

RBI withdraws Rs 2000 notes from circulation, politicians react

The Reserve Bank of India on Friday announced the withdrawal Rs 2,000 note, from circulation, adding that the notes will continue to be legal tender. It said the existing Rs 2,000 notes can be deposited or exchanged in banks until September 30, but with a limit “Rs 20,000 at a time”. The central bank advised the public to deposit Rs 2,000 notes — introduced during demonetisation in November 2016, into their bank accounts and/ or exchange them into notes of other denominations at any bank branch. It also advised banks to stop issuing Rs 2,000 notes with immediate effect. This decision received praise as well as criticism from political fronts.

Three days after announcing that he was stepping down as the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), veteran leader Sharad Pawar Friday withdrew his decision after a 18-member committee of senior party leaders, unanimously rejected his resignation. Pawar at a press conference announced his decision. His daughter and Baramati MP Supriya Sule, Maharashtra NCP chief Jayant Patil and senior party leader Praful Patel were among those present at the press meet. Incidentally, Pawar’s nephew and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ajit Pawar was absent. NCP leader Praful Patel had briefed the media about the committee’s decision to reject Mr. Pawar’s decision. Workers who had gathered outside the NCP headquarters since early morning celebrated the committee’s decision by bursting crackers and chanting slogans.
