Gunners 'gunning' for Champion League, FA cup not important: Arsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that qualifying for the Champions League is more important than winning the oldest English knock-out championship FA Cup.

Wenger termed the FA Cup as 'bonus' and 'enjoyment' and claimed that he would like to see Arsenal in top four first. "The Champions League is compulsory. The FA Cup is something that is for enjoyment. It would be a bonus. Champions League, for us, is something that is needed," said Wenger.

Arsenal would host Leeds United tonight in a third-round FA Cup tie and Gunners wont be taking them lightly since last year when these two teams met at the same stage of the FA Cup, Arsenal were saved by a late Cesc Fabregas penalty at the Emirates Stadium.

After drawing 1-1 at home, Arsenal then progressed ahead after defeating Leeds United at Elland Road, The Daily Star reports. "The basis of our life at the top level is dictated by the championship. But our life, at the level where we are, with the wages and aspirations we have, is to play in the Champions League. After that you want to win other trophies," he added.

The club supporters are now getting impatient due to six consecutive trophy less seasons and even this year the FA Cup seems there most probable prospect to win a trophy. Wenger believes that even if his team hasn't won any trophy in the past six years but they haven't done badly either.

"I do not try to defend the fact that we did not win. But it has always been looked at like 'You have not won a trophy so you have been nowhere for six years', but we have been in the Champions League Final and semi-finals," he added.

He stressed on the fact that his side did qualify this year too for group stages of Champions League and said that his team would try to do well in the FA Cup.

"And this year we are again one of the two teams who qualified from the group stages. But I can't say the FA Cup is not important. We will try to do well and it's very important to win against Leeds," he added.
