Smriti Mandhana's parents in Sangli were relieved to see their daughter make a comeback from injury in fine fashion during her match-winning 90 in India's World Cup opener against England at Derby on Saturday.
"It was a big match for her as she was playing after a gap of four and a half months. We were more worried as to how she would perform after the knee surgery in Australia (performed by Dr David Young), said Smriti's mother Smita.
The Mandhanas watched the entire match on TV in their new home at Sangli. "We got a little tense when she was injured while fielding, but we spoke to her after the match and were relieved to learn that it was not a serious injury. We were not disappointed after she was out for 90 because she has made India and us proud. The credit goes her dedication," Smita added.
Smriti's local coach Anant Tambvekar was equally exited. "Smriti still practises for six to seven hours daily and attends her net sessions with dedication. This was her very first big match after the injury in Big Bash League in Australia. We hope she continues her good form and brings glory to the nation," said Tambvekar.
