The good news is that it's not compulsory to bet, and even if you feel like throwing a tener on the nose of a horse once in a while, it is easy to learn how to do it in style. The Mumbai racing season gets underway on Saturday (Jan 31) at the Mahalaxmi racecourse. Starting today, MiD DAY features a Dummy's Guide to Horse Racing, here is the first of the three installments. Never been to the races? Never mind. Welcome to Mahalaxmi racecourse of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) Ltd. This is the place where people who love horses and races get together to enjoy their hobby. Yes you heard it right! Not everyone you find here is obsessed with gambling. Racing is fast turning into a lifestyle sport, and more and more people are discovering this is one of the best places to celebrate life and horses! From horse owners who enjoy watching their horses galloping to trainers who care for them to jockeys who ride them to people who throng the paddock to have a look at them the common thread that binds everyone here is their love for horses. You can see it in everyone's eyes. Chances are you too will fall in love with the nature's most exquisite (and athletic!) creation, and wonder if you could come here often. Should you feel so, here are some tips. Do you know the Mahalaxmi racetrack is regarded, even by foreign riders who come often, as one of the best in the world? It is a 2,400-metre (mile-and-a-half long) oval turf track with the winning post bang opposite the Members' stand (which unfortunately, was gutted in twin fires last year, and is under repair at the moment). The beauty of the Mahalaxmi track is that all its turns have such perfect banking and easy angles that horses and jockeys rarely have to compromise with their speed while negotiating them.
