The police lathicharged to chase away activists of a fringe political outfit, whose activist held a demonstration outside the city airport in protest against presence of Australian cricketers in the IPL franchise Deccan Chargers.
The Deccan Chargers team, led by former Australian player Adam Gilchrist, arrived here today.
Holding placards bearing slogans like 'Australians go back', and 'Stop racial attack against Indians', the Kalinga Sena activists demonstrated at the airport.
The police used batons to disperse them, resulting in injury to at least three persons including a woman.
The police, however, safely escorted the Deccan Chargers team and put them in their hotel.
The Deccan Chargers are here to play two of their home matches at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on March 19 and 21 against Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils respectively. Besides Gilchirst, the team has three more Australians in Andrew Symonds, Ryan Harris and Mitchell Marsh.
The Sena, that came to the limelight after launching an attack on the then Team India coach Greg Chappell in 2007, had opposed presence of Australians in the IPL team following racial attack on Indians Down Under.
Kalinga Sena Chief Hemanta Rath condemned the lathi charge saying that the activists were protesting peacefully in a democratic manner.
