Given the number of youngsters already being consumed by the glitz and glamour surrounding Indian cricket, it has become a cause of concern for the national cricket board. Selected for the first time in the senior India team, the spotlight is now on the 20-year-old dashing left-hand batsman, Saurabh Tiwary. Apart from proving himself as a cricketer at the highest level, how he handles the spotlight will be equally important for Tiwary's career.
His long-time coach and mentor, Kajal Das expressed confidence that Tiwary is not the one to be bedazzled the bright lights.
"There will be no need (for the Board) to worry about Tiwary. He's bal brahmachari (one who practices abstinence)," Das told MiD DAY. "He's a terrific character with a great commitment level. He's got the break... woh sab sambhal lega abhi (he will handle every situation now). He will be a great asset to the Indian team," added Das, who started coaching Tiwary at Cable Coaching Academy in Jamshedpur.
The Jharkhand Ranji coach's confidence stems from the fact that one of the player he coached, M S Dhoni, has already dealt with fame successfully. "I coached Dhoni from his under-19 cricket days and temperament-wise Tiwary is similar to the India captain. Both are calm, quite and believe in enjoying the game," said Das.
The Indian Premier League may not have been good for some youngsters but for Tiwary it has been a boon.
Mainly because he has been fortunate to be under the tutelage of Sachin Tendulkar. "When the best batsman in the world asks a player to bat at No 3 in his team, it proves the great man's confidence in him. Tendulkar's decision to send Tiwary at No 3 for Mumbai Indians has acted as a great inspiration for him. That was the turning point of his career," said Das.
"He is greatly influenced by Tendulkar and tries to follow his example. He cannot have a better role model."
