The German veteran improved to 18-4 since May and will face the winner of a later match between Chilean fourth seed Fernando Gonzalez and American Wayne Odesnik for a semi-final berth in the US Open hardcourt tuneup event. Spaniard Ferrero, a former world number one who lost a clay final Sunday in Croatia, saved only 1-of-5 break points against 31-year-old Haas, who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals before losing to eventual champion Roger Federer. US top seed and three-time Washington champion Andy Roddick meets countryman Sam Querrey, a champion last week at Los Angeles after runner-up finishes at Indianapolis and Newport, in a later third-round match. Defending champion and second seed Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina meets another former world number one, Australia's Lleyton Hewitt.
