His first international game for India was a Twenty20 match at the 2007 ICC World T20 and since then he is a hit.

As the Chargers start their IPL title-defence against Kolkata Knight Riders today, they will be looking for inspiration and runs from their star player, Sharma. "I enjoy playing all formats of the game. But yes, IPL has been special for me. Generally, I have been doing well in the Twenty20 format. The expectations will be high and I want to do well in all the three departments - batting, bowling and fielding," the Chargers' vice-captain told MiD DAY yesterday. "T20 is not all about hitting. If you play proper cricketing shots, you will still be successful. At the same time, I can adapt according to the situation. Whenever I want to be aggressive, I can be. I can score runs of every ball when I want to and can hit a six whenever it is needed," added the 22-year-old batsman. The young generation cricketer seems to thrive in the party atmosphere at the IPL games. Does music, dancing cheerleaders and the boisterous crowd give him that adrenaline rush which lifts his game? "That is what IPL is about; fun and entertainment. It's a great experience. The tournament is back in India and it's very exciting. But my focus will be on cricket," said Sharma. That the Mumbai boy will be playing the IPL opener in his hometown only increases the spotlight on Sharma. "I have played all my cricket in Mumbai. So, it's exciting to be playing here," he said.
