When Nayan Mongia first toured England in 1990, he impressed legendary English keeper Alan Knott, who claimed Mongia was a natural. Having spent many years as India's second wicketkeeper to Kiran More, Mongia got his breaktrhough int the team in the mid-1990s and was the number one choice as wicket-keeper for many years.

On October 30, 1994, Nayan Mongia was embroiled in a controversy after he and Manoj Prabhakar dead-batted to give up a chase while playing the West Indies in an ODI in Kanpur. The Indian team were chasing a target of 258 in 50 Overs. When Mongia came to bat India needed over 60 runs to win from 9 overs. However, Mongia scored merely 4 runs off 21 balls along with Manoj Prabhakar who also played a slow knock as a result of which India lost the match by 46 runs.

In 2004, Nayan Mongia was named as a coach of Thailand national cricket team. He was coach for 2004 ACC Trophy in Malaysia. Along with national team, Mongia was also named coach of Thailand national under-19 cricket team as well.
