Gill on captaincy appointment
Reflecting on his appointment as Test captain, Gill admitted to being deeply moved. “I was overwhelmed when I was given the captaincy,” he said. Speaking about his approach to captaincy, Gill emphasised the importance of player communication and team bonding. “I don’t have any particular style. As I get more experience, my personal style will come forward. I like having communication with players and talking to them. I want to make a bond with players. It is important. Understand their weakness. If players feel secure, they can give 100 percent,” he added.
Gambhir on Bengaluru stampede
Gambhir condemned the tragic stampede that occurred during RCB’s IPL victory parade, reiterating his long-held opposition to roadshows. “I was never a believer that we need to have road shows. I was of the same opinion I was playing even after winning 2007. Life of people is far important. I will continue to saying that. In the future, we need to be more aware. Have it in closed door or inside a stadium. It is very tragic what happened. we are all responsible. I hope nothing like this happens in future.”
Gambhir on Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion
Addressing the much-discussed omission of Shreyas Iyer, Gambhir reiterated that form remains the primary criterion but selection slots are limited. “Anyone can be called if you are in form. We can only pick 18. The chairman of selectors has answered the question,” he said.
Gambhir on India's playing XI
While the final playing XI is yet to be finalised, Gambhir assured they would select the combination that can deliver results. “We will play the best playing XI which can give us result whether that is spin bowling all-rounder or pace-bowling all-rounder. Test matches can be won only by taking 20 wickets," he said.
Gambhir on Jasprit Bumrah’s availability
Gambhir confirmed that star pacer Jasprit Bumrah will not play all five Tests, saying, "We haven’t decided which three Tests Jasprit Bumrah will play. A lot will depend on the results and how the series progresses. We’ve picked enough bowlers, and many of our pacers are in a great space to win us Test matches from any position. When you have someone like Jasprit Bumrah, regardless of how many matches he plays, it’s a great sight for us. It’s difficult to replace someone like him, but as I said during the Champions Trophy, we have enough quality in the squad.”
