France’s bid for men’s Olympic football glory got off to a nightmare start with a 1-4 defeat by Mexico on Thursday, while Richarlison scored a hat-trick as reigning champions Brazil beat Germany in a six-goal thriller.

Mexico took the lead through Alexis Vega, before Sebastian Cordova doubled their advantage. France captain Andre-Pierre Gignac pulled one back from the penalty spot. But Uriel Antuna and Eduardo Aguirre netted late on for Mexico.
