Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to keep digging for gold as they prepare to start their latest bid for a first English Premier League (EPL) title since 2004 against a revamped Manchester United on Sunday. The Gunners have finished as EPL runners-up for the last three seasons, sparking criticism of their failure to get over the line in the title race as the pressure mounts on Arteta.
However, buoyed by a host of new signings, including striker Viktor Gyokeres, Arteta is convinced they can finally get their hands on the Premier League crown this season. “You keep digging, digging, and digging because one day the gold is going to be there,” he told reporters on Friday. “For three seasons we’ve had more points than [nearly] any other team in this league, which is incredible. But now we have to win the title. That’s the objective,” he added.
Meanwhile, United will be looking to bounce back from their 15th-place finish last season with new striker Benjamin Sesko tipped to be the difference maker. The Red Devils’s boss Ruben Amorim certainly believes the former RB Leipzig frontman is ready to rise up to the challenge. “I don’t need to tell Ben [Sesko], ‘Ben, this is Manchester United, a lot of pressure. Every game is like do or die’,” Amorim said. “He is always thinking about football. He’s really obsessed about that,” he added.
