Cambridge School (Kandivli) pulled off a major upset when they defeated defending champions Don Bosco High School (Matunga) 1-0 in a boys U-16 Division-I match of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) inter-school football tournament at Wings Sports Centre (Bandra) on Wednesday.

Bosco dominate possession

Don Bosco dominated possession at the start and created multiple chances. However, they were unable to find the back of the net. Sheldon Dias was denied by the post early in the first half. Another golden chance went in vain when Prajeet Vinayagamurty failed to convert from close range. Cambridge, on the other hand, focused on strong defensive organisation, ending the first half 0-0.

After the break, Don Bosco were once again denied by the post off Naveen Ghaneshan’s strike from outside the box. In the dying moments of the match,  Rudra Yadav of Cambridge made a charging run into the box and was fouled by Don Bosco defender Jacob Kshetrimayum, resulting in a penalty. Parth Shinde stepped up and calmly placed the ball into the left corner, giving Cambridge a crucial 1-0 victory in stoppage time (50+2).

“It’s a great start for us. It’s always good to begin with a win, and we beat the defending champions. This will boost the team’s morale. Our school management will also be happy when they hear this  news. I hope we can perform well in the next match too,” Cambridge coach Tushar Poojary told mid-day.

‘We’ll come back stronger’

Don Bosco coach Leslie Machado was dejected. “We missed too many chances and lacked communication, but I’m sure we will work on our gameplan and come back stronger,” he said.
