The District Sports Office (DSO) yesterday disqualified the Thakur Vidya Mandir (Kandivli) boy's U-14 side from their suburban tournament for flouting tournament rules.
Thakur Vidya Mandir (Kandivli) beat St Lawrence (Kandivli) 2-1 on August 28 and three days later (Aug 31) registered a 1-0 win over Swami Vivekanand International (Borivli). However, soon after their defeat, St Lawrence lodged a protest with the DSO claiming some of the Thakur players were overaged.
Thereafter, while Thakur were playing Swami Vivekanand the latter noticed that some names of the Thakur players written in the line-up did not match with the boys on the field and complained about this to referee Babu Joseph. On further inquiry, it was learnt that the Thakur side were not even carrying their identity cards, which is mandatory as it proves the boys' ages.
"When we asked Thakur Vidya Mandir coach (Lawrence Bing) for their I-cards, he said he had not received them from DSO, but when I told DSO this, they said he was wrong," said referee Joseph.
DSO's Mumbai suburb head Sanjay Mahadik explained: "We disqualified the Thakur side because firstly, their line-up of players for both their matches were different from the list provided to us during registration. Secondly, they failed to show us their I-cards. All players participating in DSO tournaments are issued computerised I-cards."
Thakur coach Bing accepted his mistake: "It's my fault. I didn't carry our entry form, and some of our jersey numbers were not in order."
