PV Sindhu is the only Indian singles shuttler to be seeded at the upcoming BWF World Championships, with Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy ranked below the seeding levels on Friday.
The tournament is scheduled to be held in Paris from August 25 to 31. Interestingly, the double Olympic medallist Sindhu is the only Indian to become a world champion.
Sindhu is seeded 15th out of 16 shuttlers in the women’s draw, headed by defending champion An Se Young.
At the 2023 World Championships in Copenhagen, India had two men among the top 16 seeds — Prannoy at No. 9 and Lakshya at No. 11. No Indian shuttler features among the same 16 seeds in men’s singles this year. The seedings were based on the world rankings released on Friday.
Sindhu will be looking to regain her form after an inconsistent season till now. After reaching the quarter-finals at the India Open at the start of the year, Sindhu hasn’t reached the last eight in any event since.
Lakshya was among the quarter-finalists of the All England Open, but faced difficulties in the Asian leg of the season. But Lakshya, 21st in the world, will hope to do better at the tournament than his ranking suggests.
Prannoy is ranked 34th. In the 11 tournaments he played this season, Prannoy hasn’t reached the quarter-finals even once.
Former World No. 1 duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are seeded ninth in men’s doubles.
