Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton on Thursday said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support he has received following the death of his pet dog Roscoe.
The Ferrari driver announced Roscoe’s death in a social media post on Monday, calling him a “beautiful soul, an angel and true friend.” The decision to put the 12-year-old bulldog, who was suffering from pneumonia, to sleep was “the hardest decision of my life,” he said in the post.
“Lots of messages, quite overwhelming to be honest to see just how many people Roscoe touched around the world,” Hamilton told reporters at the Marina Bay track on Thursday ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.
“I’ve not been able to reply to everybody, but it was the most important thing in my life, so it was a very difficult experience,” he added.
Roscoe has accompanied Hamilton to a number of races over the years and is popular with fans, drivers and members of the F1 paddock. He even made a cameo appearance in the recently-released F1 movie starring Brad Pitt and co-produced by Hamilton.
The tributes have poured in since his death on Sunday from fans, rival teams and drivers, the sport’s governing FIA, and Formula One’s social media handles.
“I know so many people in the world have gone through it and know what it’s like to have a pet that gives you such amazing love. I think it’s in moments like that where you really see people show up for you and that’s been really overwhelming to see and really welcomed,” Hamilton added.
