The 23-year-old World Champion said, "I do not know what has happened. Right now I have no energy and my opponents are playing well. They fight better than me. I really need a rest."
Despite having started with white pieces in the fifth round against the 27-year-old from Azerbaijan, Carlsen failed to take control of the game.
Instead, it was Radjabov who looked masterful. After 52 moves and about five hours of chess, the Norwegian gave up.
Thus, he has gone on two straight losses after he started the tournament with two brilliant wins and one draw . Today is a rest day. Saturday meetings Carlsen Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the tournament's sixth party.
On Wednesday, Carlsen had lost to Italian Fabiano Caruana. It was Carlsen's first defeat since losing to Caruana in June last year. The loss against Radjabov also meant Carlsen gave up the lead in the tournament.
