Third seed Novak Djokovic dug himself out of a deep hole in sweltering conditions to outlast Serb Davis Cup teammate and close friend Viktor Troicki in the first round of the US Open yesterday. Two sets to one down and facing a break point for 1-4 down in the fourth, Djokovic clawed his way back in what turned out to be a survival-of-the-fittest showdown to win 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
