It was the second day since the start of the World Para Athletics Championships [WPAC] here at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium that India failed to add any medal to its tally, but the stories of triumphs and trials of para-athletes never fell behind. One such champion is Switzerland’s Elena Kratter — an orthopedic technician who switched from alpine skiing to para-athletics.
Elena won her second consecutive WPAC silver medal in women’s long-jump T63 and finished fourth in 100m T63 sprint.
Elena had her right leg amputated shortly after her premature birth and complications arising from it.
In 2019, she suffered another injury during her days as an alpine skiing athlete — something she came across at the age of 11 after an orthopedic surgeon suggested a ski course. Since then, she has been training in both long jump and 100m disciplines.
Meanwhile, Indians didn’t fare well on the day. In the women’s javelin throw F56 final, Suchitra Parida finished sixth, with a best throw of 18.29m. Akira Banothu stood seventh (51.16sec) in the men’s 400m T38 final. Dilip Gavit though qualified for the men’s 400m T47 final, finishing second in Heat 2 (48.20sec). In the men’s discus throw F57 qualification round, Priyans Kumar bagged a place in the final by finishing fourth (39.12m).
