Hosszu touched the wall at four minutes, 30.29 seconds — just under two seconds short of Ye Shiwen's world record she had been chasing — with Maya di Rado of the United States claiming second at 1.32secs with Emily Overholt of Canada taking bronze at 2.13.

Hosszu matched her double haul from the 2013 world championships when she also left Barcelona with both the 200 and 400m IM golds. This is her third medal in Kazan after also taking a bronze in the 200m backstroke. Meanwhile, Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri won the world 1500m freestyle title yesterday after China's world record holder Sun Yang was a shock withdrawal from the final.
