The entire brutal assault was captured on CCTV
The accused Shashikant Kalgude (44), a resident of Tulsidham, Dharmaveer Nagar in Thane, was caught on CCTV assaulting a female traffic police constable when she stopped him for talking over the phone while driving his Scorpio car at Nitin company junction in Thane.
“I was doing my job and when I saw him talking over the phone while driving, I stopped him. He immediately started shouting that “you don’t know me” and began assaulting me. He punched my nose so hard that I couldn’t see clearly for a while. I have never experienced such behaviour in my eight-year-long career. I appeal to the government to take preventive action against such goons who don’t respect women. I am a cop, still I was assaulted, what about common women?” said the constable from the Wagle Estate traffic unit, while adding that she was also sexually assaulted as the accused held her name badge on her chest.
Shashikant Kalgude, the accused
People present at the spot immediately came to help the cop. “An advocate along with four people caught hold of the accused and informed the police. We have around five eyewitnesses in the case,” said a police officer from Naupada police station.
A case was registered against Kalgude at Naupada police station under Sections 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.
Police says
M Bagga, Senior Police Inspector, Naupada police station, said, “We registered a case and arrested him on Thursday. The constable has suffered an injury to her nose after she was punched.”
The accused was granted bail on Friday but few hours later, he was again arrested under Section 110 of CrPC (security for good behaviour from habitual offenders) as he has two criminal cases against him. He was sent to magisterial custody for 14 days. Rashmi Karandikar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Thane traffic police, told mid-day, “We have seized his car and sent a letter to the Regional Transport Office asking them to cancel his licence. While checking his past record we found that he has two criminal cases against him.”
The entire incident has been captured on CCTV and the police have included the footage as part of the evidence. Vijay Kokare, an activist from Kalyan, said, “If a policewoman can be assaulted in such a way, how will we feel safe? Such people should be booked and jailed.”
