Fifteen years after Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara first hit theatres, the coming-of-age classic continues to hold a special place in the hearts of movie lovers. As the film marks its milestone anniversary, Kalki Koechlin has opened up about her fondest memories from the shoot, describing the experience as one of the most relaxed and enjoyable of her career.
Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar's Excel Entertainment and directed by Zoya Akhtar, the 2011 film starred Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin in a story that redefined friendship, travel and self-discovery for an entire generation.
Recalling the Spain schedule, Kalki said the atmosphere on set was refreshingly normal despite the presence of major stars. "We were shooting in Spain. Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif were already personalities and celebrities. If we were shooting in Mumbai or any part of India, we'd be surrounded by security. However, they were just hanging out with us on the cobbled streets of Spain. We'd sit together at cafes, have our meals and then return to shoot. It was a very relaxed atmosphere. None of us felt intimidated by each other. We would only hang out," she shared.
Looking back at the film, Kalki credits Zoya Akhtar's storytelling for blending humour and emotional depth so seamlessly.
"It is great to have humour and seriousness in the same film. Zoya Akhtar was good at incorporating both in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. She always found a way to add bits of humour even in serious scenes," she said.
Kalki also reflected on her character Natasha, who is often remembered as one of the film's biggest "red flags." While she agrees Natasha was possessive and controlling, she believes the character was also unapologetically strong.
"Natasha has issues of jealousy, control and possessiveness. But she also knows what she wants and isn't afraid to say it. She doesn't want to stay in a relationship that makes her unhappy. In that sense, she's a strong woman," Kalki explained.
She further revealed that before filming, Zoya insisted Natasha had to remain funny despite her flaws. "She told me Natasha needed to be funny. She even made me listen to 'I'm a Rock Chick in a Hard Rock World' to help shape the character," Kalki recalled.
As for a sequel, the actor admitted she'd happily return if the story felt right. "I'd be happy to be employed," she joked, adding that any follow-up would naturally have to reflect how the characters have grown over the years.
Fifteen years on, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara remains more than just a road-trip film; it continues to inspire audiences to embrace friendship, adventure and the idea of living life to the fullest.
