Ashmit Patel, Maheck Chahal announce engagement, a day after Riya Sen's wedding

Bollywood actor Ashmit Patel surprised Maheck Chahal, his girlfriend of more than 10 years, by popping the question during their recent European vacation.

The news comes in a day after Ashmit's ex, Riya Sen, got married to her boyfriend Shivam Tiwari.

In an interview to Bombay Times, Ashmit Patel said, "I never told Maheck that I was carrying a ring with me. We were supposed to meet her family in Norway and I wanted to propose to her in Paris, the city of love, but it did not happen that way. We were at a cozy restaurant in Marbella (Spain), which had a fantastic view, and I decided to propose."

While talking about the proposal, Ashmit Patel told the newspaper, "Maheck has a habit of having dessert after dinner, and I had decided to propose then. However, on that night, she did not ask for any dessert. So, I excused myself and asked the waiters to get some strawberries dipped in chocolate. I then placed the ring on the plate with strawberries, under a bowl which was placed upside."

Reacting to the surprise, Maheck Chahal told the daily, "I was so surprised, that I laughed out loud. Since we were not sure which finger - right or left - the ring should be worn on, we paused for a while. He then went down on his knees and the entire restaurant cheered for us. It was a very romantic proposal."

The couple plan to get married in six months. While Ashmit wants a destination wedding abroad, Maheck prefers getting hitched in India, added the report.

Ashmit Patel also shared a photo of him going down on his knees and proposing to Maheck Chahal. He captioned the picture, "She said YES!!! @maheckchahal #downonmyknee #engagement #ring #butwhichfinger #partnerforlife #bae #yesididit (sic)"

An MMS of actress Riya Sen and her then boyfriend Ashmit Patel showing the pair in a compromising position rocked the industry in 2005. Following this incident, the couple split, although Riya denied that she was the girl in the clip. A commentator claimed that the footage was an orchestrated publicity stunt for their film 'Silsilay' which released the same year.
