Bollywood actress Kriti Sanon has once again addressed the controversy surrounding her viral Raksha Bandhan ad during her latest appearance on Kareena Kapoor Khan's talk show, What Women Want Season 6. Kriti opened up about the debate around her outfit and the controversy surrounding it. Kriti also admitted that she never imagined her "choli" would become a topic of news debates.
In the recent promo of Kareena Kapoor's show, Kriti is seen speaking to the host about the controversy, saying, "I couldn't believe... when my choli had become like a 6-person panel discussion on prime-time news." Kareena reacted to her revelation with a shocked, "I know."
Notably, this is not the first time Kriti had opened up about the backlash she faced for the ad. Soon after the controversy erupted, Kriti had shared a note on Instagram defending the advertisement. She also questioned the practice of judging women based on their clothes. She wrote, "Also, when will we stop telling women what to wear? Ethnic fashion has evolved over the years, yet a woman's respect for her culture is still measured by her clothes. Culture and traditions are in her heart, not in her neckline!"
Later, Kriti maintained her stance on the broader conversation around women, clothing and patriarchy on social media. She had reshared a post that read, "Guys, it's not Men vs Women," slamming patriarchal and misogynistic attitudes.
The controversy started after jewellery brand GIVA released its Raksha Bandhan ad featuring Kriti Sanon. The actress was seen wearing an Indo-Western outfit in the commercial while celebrating the festival by tying Rakhi to her brother and pet dog.
It was Kriti's choice of clothing for the occasion that did not sit well with many and left the internet divided. Many social media users criticised the outfit as being inappropriate for a traditional festival and even questioned the ad's unconventional portrayal of Raksha Bandhan. On the other hand, many supported the actress against the criticism.
Following the backlash, GIVA pulled down the ad. The brand later clarified its decision to take down the ad citing safety of its teams and stores.
