Rani Mukerji's mother Krishna passes away at 75; family requests for privacy

Rani Mukerji's mother, Krishna Mukerji, passed away at the age of 75 on Tuesday afternoon. As per IANS, the news was confirmed by Yash Raj Films through an official statement, with the family requesting privacy as they grieve the loss of a close family member.

"With heavy hearts, we share that Rani Mukerji's mother Mrs Krishna Mukerji, 75, passed away this afternoon. The family is deeply grateful for your love, prayers, and support and respectfully requests privacy during this time of immense grief," the statement read.

Krishna was a constant presence in Rani's life and had accompanied the actress at several public appearances over the years. The mother-daughter duo shared a close bond, which Rani had spoken about on various occasions. Krishna was also associated with Bengali cinema and had worked as a playback singer during her career.

She was married to filmmaker Ram Mukherjee, who died in 2017. Ram was among the co-founders of Filmalaya Studios and had worked in the Hindi and Bengali film industries. The couple had two children Rani and filmmaker-producer Raja Mukherjee.

On Rani's work front

Rani went on to establish herself as one of the leading actresses in Hindi cinema, with a career spanning several decades. She became a household name with films including Ghulam, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Saathiya, Hum Tum and Black. Her performances across different genres earned her multiple accolades over the years. Her most recent release was Mardaani 3, which hit theatres in 2026.

The news of Krishna's death comes shortly after Rani was honoured with the prestigious Raj Kapoor Special Contribution Award at the 62nd Maharashtra State Film Awards ceremony. She received the honour from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of Cultural Affairs Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar.

While accepting the award, Rani spoke about her deep emotional connection with Maharashtra and the film industry. Addressing the gathering in Marathi, she said, "Majhyasathi Maharashtra fakt ek rajya nahi. Maharashtra majhi janmabhoomi aahe. Majhi karmabhoomi aahe. Ani majhya ayushyacha ek avibhajya bhaag aahe."

Translated, she said that Maharashtra was not merely a state for her, but her birthplace, the land where she built her career and an inseparable part of her life.

As the family mourns Krishna's passing, tributes and messages of support are expected to pour in for Rani and her loved ones. The family has appealed for privacy during this difficult time.
