Kalki Koechlin wanted to stab producer who asked her to get fillers for laugh lines

Actor Kalki Koechlin, who starred in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, has shared an uncomfortable encounter with a film producer who casually suggested she get cosmetic fillers during a lunch meeting. Speaking to YouTuber and comedian Lilly Singh, the actor said the comment left her fuming internally, but she chose wit over confrontation.

Kalki Koechlin recalls awkward producer remark

Recalling the incident, Kalki Koechlin said the producer was initially talking about his former partner, an actor, claiming she had "gone too far" with Botox. The conversation then unexpectedly shifted to Kalki's appearance.

"He casually said, 'All you need is a little filler for your laughter lines,'" Kalki recalled.

The comment caught her off guard, and while she admitted she "wanted to stab him with my fork," she decided against reacting angrily.

Instead, she replied with humour, saying, "Well, I better stop laughing so much then."

Although the light-hearted comeback ended the conversation, Kalki admitted she was "seething" inside. Looking back, she said it was one of those subtle remarks people often make without realising how offensive they can be.

"He stopped after that and didn't talk about it. But it's just these subtle ways of people slipping in comments like this," she added.

Kalki Koechlin says to pick and choose your battles

Rather than regretting her response, Kalki said she eventually channelled the experience into her stage performance I'm Okay, which explores motherhood, postpartum experiences and the everyday sexism women encounter.

She explained that audiences, especially women, immediately connected with the story because many had experienced similar comments about their appearance.

When asked why she didn't confront the producer directly, Kalki said not every situation allows for an immediate response.

"You have to pick and choose your battles," she said, adding that sometimes people have to navigate uncomfortable conversations with colleagues, friends or even family members without escalating the situation.

Beyond the incident, Kalki spoke about the gender pay gap in the entertainment industry, revealing that it can be frustrating to discover male actors with similar experience earning significantly more. She credited the growing solidarity among women in the industry, saying they openly discuss salaries, workplace experiences and even warn one another about problematic individuals.

"What people call gossip is actually solidarity. It's community. It's having each other's back," she said.

Kalki, who made her acting debut with Dev D in 2009, has built a career with acclaimed performances in films including Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Margarita with a Straw, Waiting and Gully Boy. Her latest comments have sparked conversations about everyday sexism, body image and the importance of women supporting one another in the workplace.
