The controversy surrounding the viral "Rs 370 biryani" remark has taken a fresh legal turn, with Gurugram Police registering an FIR against stand-up comedian Pranit More and audience member Himanshu Jangra following a complaint by the National Commission for Women (NCW). The case stems from a widely circulated video clip from one of More's comedy shows that sparked outrage on social media and triggered discussions about consent, accountability, and the limits of comedy.

A new lawsuit for Pranit More

The controversy began after a crowd-work segment from More's performance went viral online. During the interaction, Jangra recounted a date where he claimed to have spent Rs 370 on chicken biryani and allegedly suggested that he expected physical intimacy in return. The comments were widely criticized for appearing to promote entitlement and non-consensual behaviour toward women. More was also criticised for laughing during the exchange and not challenging the remarks at the time.

Taking note of the viral clip, the NCW intervened and termed the matter serious. The commission stated that portraying conduct that undermines a woman's consent, dignity, and bodily autonomy as entertainment was deeply concerning. In its communication to authorities, the NCW said, "Presenting sexual harassment or behaviour against the dignity of women as humour or entertainment is unacceptable." The commission subsequently sought action from Haryana Police and issued notices to both More and Jangra.

All about the controversy

Following the complaint, Gurugram Police registered an FIR at DLF Phase 2 Police Station and launched an investigation into the matter. This comes days after Maharashtra Cyber Police also registered a separate case against More, Jangra, and others over allegedly objectionable content circulated on social media.

Amid mounting backlash, More recently issued a public apology. Accepting responsibility for his conduct during the show, he admitted that he should have intervened when the remarks were made. "I got carried away," he said, adding, "I think this was my biggest mistake." The comedian further acknowledged the criticism coming his way and stated that he deserved the backlash for failing to address the comments in the moment.

The incident has continued to generate debate online, with many calling for greater responsibility from performers and audiences alike. As investigations proceed, the case remains under scrutiny from both law enforcement agencies and public observers.
