What happens when two people who claim to understand love for a living find themselves caught in a romance they didn't see coming? Netflix's upcoming Tamil series #Love explores exactly that, bringing dating apps, workplace rivalry and modern relationships together in a contemporary rom-com.

Arjun Das, Aishwarya Lekshmi explore modern love

The series stars Arjun Das and Aishwarya Lekshmi in a fresh pairing and is set to premiere on Netflix on October 2. Showrun and produced by Soundarya Rajinikanth and directed by Balaji Mohan, the series follows two rival dating-app founders whose professional competition takes an unexpected turn when their own ideas about love are put to the test.

Set against the world of rival dating platforms FOUND and Find My Bae, #Love follows Tara and Matthew, founders who have made a business out of helping people find their perfect matches. However, when it comes to their own relationship, compatibility may prove harder to calculate.

For Soundarya Rajinikanth, the appeal of the series lies in how it approaches relationships in the digital age without losing its emotional core. "What drew me to #Love was how effortlessly it captures relationships today without losing its warmth and emotion," she said.

The showrunner added that Balaji Mohan has created characters who are "ambitious, flawed and incredibly easy to root for", while calling the pairing of Arjun and Aishwarya a "refreshing energy".

Balaji Mohan brings a fresh rom-com

Balaji Mohan, who has directed the series, said the intention was to create a story that reflects how romance has changed while retaining the emotions audiences continue to recognise.

"When we made #Love, we wanted to tell a story that feels like it belongs to today," he said. "Romance has evolved, the way we meet people has changed, but the emotions at the heart of relationships remain incredibly familiar and timeless."

The director also stressed that the series isn't solely about its central romance, with friendship, family, ambition and self-discovery forming part of the characters' journeys.

Written by Nirmal Williams, with Sharada Subramanian and Shweta Chakravarty as co-writers, #Love is produced by May6 Entertainment Factory. The series premieres on Netflix on October 2.
