Delhi zoo observes World Elephant Day with awareness activities

The National Zoological Park in Delhi observed World Elephant Day on Wednesday with a series of awareness and educational activities aimed at sensitising visitors and students about elephant conservation, welfare and their role in maintaining ecological balance.

The programme included interactive discussions, a zoo walk to the elephant enclosure and a special enrichment feast for the elephants, giving visitors and school students an opportunity to learn about the animals and observe them during the activity, according to a statement.

The zoo currently houses two Asian elephants, "Heera Gaj" and "Raj Laxmi", both approximately 48 years old. The zoo provides them with care, nutrition, enrichment and veterinary support, it said.

School students visiting the zoo participated in discussions on elephant-related facts and the significance of World Elephant Day.

A zoo walk to the elephant enclosure was also organised to familiarise students and visitors with elephant habitats and their ecological importance, it read.

A special enrichment feast was organised at the elephant enclosure at 11.20 am, which was observed by students, visitors and zoo staff. The programme at the enclosure concluded with the singing of "Vande Mataram".

The zoo also organised an interaction with elephant keepers, mahouts and other animal-care workers, recognising their contribution to the care, management and welfare of the elephants, the statement read.

The Director, National Zoological Park, Sanjeet Kumar interacted with visitors and staff and discussed issues related to elephant conservation and welfare, including the need to protect natural habitats and promote scientific management and animal welfare.

He said elephant conservation involves not only protecting the species but also safeguarding their habitats, ensuring their welfare and creating greater public awareness and participation. Visitors, students and staff were encouraged to contribute to wildlife conservation and promote coexistence with animals.
