A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man on the premises of a railway station in Thane district of Maharashtra, the government railway police (GRP) said on Sunday, reported the PTI.
Officials said that the GRP have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the assault that occurred at Kalyan railway station on Saturday evening, an official said, the news agency reported.
The accused brought the minor girl to the railway station around 5 pm and sexually assaulted her, they said.
Details regarding where the duo hailed from were not revealed.
The accused has been arrested. He was booked under section 137(2) (kidnapping), 64(1) (rape) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, a senior GRP official said, according to the PTI.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, a 78-year-old self-styled godman was on Tuesday arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in Thane district, police in Kalyan had earlier said, reported the PTI.
The girl was allegedly raped on the pretext of performing rituals to ward off "evil spirits" from her house, officials said.
The accused identified as Shahid Mohammad Wahid Shaikh, a resident of Ambernath, was arrested on Monday in connection with the assault, which took place last week.
According to the police, the survivor had been living with her mother in Kalyan town, following the deaths of her father and grandmother a few months ago, and the suspect, who was acquainted with the mother, allegedly convinced them that an evil spirit was haunting their house, as per the PTI.
"Under the pretext of performing rituals to cleanse their house, the accused gained entry into their residence. On May 2 and May 6, taking advantage of the mother's absence, the accused allegedly molested and raped the teen," an official said, as per the PTI.
