A dispute over Rs 1,500 between childhood friends on Wednesday night turned deadly in Mumbai's Shivajinagar area, leading to the death of a man, police said on Thursday.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 11 pm on Wednesday at MHADA Colony, Building No. 34-B, within the limits of Shivajinagar Police Station in eastern Mumbai. A 24-year-old man died after allegedly being attacked with a sharp weapon.
The victim, identified as Riyaz Sheikh, was immediately taken to Rajawadi Hospital for treatment. However, he died during treatment at around 1.15 am on July 16, it said.
According to the preliminary investigation, the accused and the victim were childhood friends but had ongoing disputes linked to family matters.
Police said the accused had also lent Rs 1,500 to the victim.
On the night of the incident, Sheikh was sitting near a water tank outside the building when the accused and his associates allegedly arrived there. A fresh argument reportedly broke out over the unpaid amount and earlier family-related disputes.
Police said the prime accused in the case allegedly attacked Sheikh with a sharp weapon, stabbing him in the stomach.
During the investigation, police found that two other individuals allegedly assisted the main accused in the crime.
A total of three accused have been identified and taken into custody in connection with the case, said an official.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is being carried out by Shivajinagar Police to establish the complete sequence of events.
